Welcome to the Managing Attendance at Work learning programme.

This programme has been designed to support managers in understanding and applying the Managing Attendance at Work Policy. The modules provide practical guidance on preventing sickness absence, supporting staff wellbeing, managing short- and long-term absence, and using occupational health services effectively.

The programme is divided into six standalone modules. You may complete the modules in any order and at a pace that suits your learning needs, although new managers may find it beneficial to work through them sequentially. Each module focuses on a specific aspect of attendance management and can be revisited whenever required as a reference resource.

While the modules provide practical guidance, managers should always refer to the latest version of the Managing Attendance at Work Policy and seek advice from People Services where required.

We hope this programme helps you to manage attendance confidently, consistently and compassionately, supporting both staff wellbeing and service delivery.

    • An introduction to Managing Attendance

Managing attendance is about more than tracking absences — it’s about supporting staff wellbeing, fostering a healthy work culture, and ensuring compassionate leadership.

This module introduces the Managing Attendance at Work Policy and how it aligns with the CAV UHB values and behaviours.

    • Notification, Reporting & Managing Leave

This resource outlines the appropriate procedure for reporting sickness, details entitlements to sick pay, and explains the impact of sickness absence on annual leave and bank holiday entitlement, in accordance with the current All Wales Managing Attendance at Work Policy.

    • Short Term Sickness (STS)

This resource explains how short-term sickness is defined, outlines the stages of the short-term sickness process, and supports managers in identifying and responding to prompts for sickness review meetings—all in line with the All Wales Managing Attendance at Work Policy.

    • Long Term Sickness (LTS)

This resource explains how long-term sickness is defined, outlines the key stages of managing extended absence—including review meetings and the final absence meeting—and highlights the required paperwork, all in line with the All Wales Managing Attendance at Work Policy.

    • Occupational Health Referrals

This resource outlines when it may be appropriate to refer an employee to Occupational Health, explains how referrals are made, and highlights the role Occupational Health plays in supporting employee wellbeing and enabling a timely, safe return to work.

It aligns with the All Wales Managing Attendance at Work Policy and emphasises early intervention, collaboration, and clear communication.

    • Making Adjustments and Supporting Return to Work

This section supports managers to help employees return to work after a period of absence. It covers how to consider and implement reasonable adjustments, manage phased returns, explore redeployment where needed, and use the right tools and documentation to support the process.
